Who we are

Stairio Limited operates Stairio inspection robots in the common stairwells of buildings whose management has engaged us. The building’s management decides where and when the robot runs; Stairio runs the robots and the system that processes the photos.

What the robot records

Still photographs (360°) of the stairwell, taken at set points during each inspection round.

Live video, only when authorised staff open the live view. Live video is not recorded or stored.

No sound. The robot has no microphone. Photos may show people who happen to be in the stairwell.

Why

To find safety and cleanliness problems in common areas: blocked exits, open fire doors, litter, spills, pests, damage, and a person lying or sleeping in the stairwell (for their welfare and for fire safety).

People walking through are not reported. We do not use the photos to identify anyone, and we do not use face recognition.

Automatic analysis

Photos are analysed automatically by Google’s Gemini AI service (Google Cloud Vertex AI) to flag possible problems; building staff review the results. Google processes the photos for us under contract and does not use them to train its models. This processing may take place outside Hong Kong.

Who can see the photos

Authorised staff of the building’s management, in the signed-in Stairio app; Stairio staff, for support and maintenance; and members of a messaging chat the building’s management has linked for alerts (Telegram). An alert can include a photo of the problem.

Our service providers: Google Cloud (stores the photos in Hong Kong and runs the analysis), Amazon Web Services (relays live video in Hong Kong; does not store it) and Telegram (delivers alerts). We do not sell personal data or use it for marketing.

How long we keep it

Photos, 360° images and the AI results that describe them are deleted automatically after 30 days. Live video is not kept. Robot activity logs contain no images and are deleted after 90 days.

Security

All connections are encrypted. Only signed-in, authorised users can see a building’s photos, and only their own building’s.

Your rights

Under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance you may ask for a copy of personal data about you, or for it to be corrected. Email us with the date, time and place, and we will reply within 40 days. We may charge a fee for a copy, which will not be excessive.
